Devised theater is collaborative, improvisational making; it is creating performance with the ideas, objects, words, songs, and movements that we have in ourselves at that very moment. Instead of following a script or predesigned choreography, we find our way together to a wild, coherent, personal theater. In this workshop, we will crack open the process of making theater, play games, dive into structured improvisation, and borrow texts from a trove of books and magazines. No prior theater or performance experience needed. Ends with a pizza party!
“If You Give a Cat a Necklace”: SHADOW PUPPET WORKSHOP

Wednesdays 3:00 – 5:00pm, October 21 – December 2, 2015 (6-week session – no class on Nov 25). For ages 7 – 12.

Kids will design and create shadow puppets and the magical world they inhabit using the simplest materials: paper, wire, fabric, feathers, and rope. We will then rehearse and perform a short puppet play based on the medieval animal tale “If you give a cat a necklace…”. The final show will be open to family and friends, and include juice and popcorn! Puppets will incorporate the re-use of objects and materials sourced by the children, as well as art supplies provided. In addition to the show, the puppets and sets will animate a lighted window installation for the holidays!
Sorry no drop-ins as we are creating an ensemble piece of theater and need everyone’s participation!

Build heat in the body for midwinter! An introduction to contemporary dance technique based on swiftness, flow and release. This class concentrates on builiding awareness, flexibility, and strength while dancing with pleasure. We begin with a simple warm up to shake out the kinks, and find an alert, expressive body. We then build luscious phrases to rocking music. Prior dance or yoga experience helpful, a basic level of fitness required. Teens (age 15 and up) with some dance training welcome.
PUPPET THEATER WORKSHOP @ Fiber Flame Studio in Saugerties, NY
Mondays 10am – noon, October 21st – November 25th, 2013 (6-week session).
Show on Friday, December 6th at 4pm
$120/full workshop ($20/class). For ages 6 – 11.
Kids will design and create papier mâché and fabric rod puppets, help in script development, rehearse and perform a short piece of puppet theater based on medieval animal stories. The final show will be open to family and friends, and include juice and popcorn! Puppets will incorporate materials sourced by the children (recycle your sweaters! scour the garage!) as well as the wealth of materials available at Fiber Flame. Workshop will be led by local theater artist Hélène Lesterlin and meets for two hours once per week.

Fundamentals of modern dance for kids! Basic skills in standing and floor work taught through a simple warm up, improvisation games and short combinations. Students will get a chance to make up their own phrases and dance with freedom to fun music!
